Soles

Exhibited in SPACE, Seville; 10-24th March 2012

As part of my research and investigation while working with the Seville office of Kamideas. I was looking into place-making and homeless people exerting what Lefebvre calls 'The Right to the City'; taking an area and portraying yourself onto that area, making it yours through occupation and reappropriation.

My partner in this project, Rowan MacKay, and I travelled the whole city of Seville until we found an abandoned factory with broken out windows and signs of inhabitation; we ventured in.

We found a group of 11 adults and children of gypsy decent living in the substandard settings surrounded by rubbish, broken glass and vermin. I asked permission to take their portraits, but they insisted that I not show their face or the area they were living in incase of revealing their location to authorities and being forcefully evicted or arrested. I settled on their shoes which seemed to be scattered everywhere as if they were at home.

Shoes hold deep connotations for post world war two Europe; the sight of uninhabited shoes immediate bring images of holocaust to mind, piles of thousands of shoes never to be walked in again. Shoes, unlike other clothing, hold their shape and personality; a person is often judged for the shoes he wears. They are personal affects, telling us something about their owners.
